How secure is my password?

THE PROBLEM

You don't know that you are using passwords which are too easy to hack.

A question from a friend

After writing the first article about password managers, a friend told me:

"I don't need password managers, I remember all my passwords but  I am not sure, if I am using strong, secure passwords. Is there a way to check them?"

After doing some research I found three very good options.

1) HOW SECURE IS MY PASSWORD?

http://howsecureismypassword.net/

2) The Password meter

http://www.passwordmeter.com/

3) A password checker from Microsoft

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/security/pc-security/password-checker.aspx

What password should I use?

The above tools can help you decide if the passwords you are using are strong enough or not.

We tried 2-3 combinations to get the idea.

Example 1

Password: John123

Needed time to crack: Instantly

Example 2

Password: CyLiNdRiC@

Needed time to crack: 14 years

Example 3

Password: My#Name#Is#John

Needed time to crack: 19 billion years

As you can understand using phrases mixed with special symbols and uppercase letters is resulting in very strong passwords. Totaly recommended!

TAKE ACTION NOW (yes, I am talking to you!)
NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE BY NOT TAKING ACTION

  1. Make a list of the most common password or password-motive you are using.
  2. Test them in one or more of the tools above.
  3. If you find that the passwords you are using are too easy to hack, then it would be a good idea to change them.
  4. Keep the results of this assessment in a special "TAKE ACTION' folder in your computer or in your office desk (if you do it on paper). Create a habit of working on the data of this 'TAKE ACTION' folder at least once a month. Decide what ACTIONS you will take from this work.

ACT NOW, NOT LATER. READING IS GOOD, DOING IS BETTER.

I would really appreciate any feedback (positive or negative) to the article or to THE ACTION suggested with any of the above options. One of the main reasons for the existence of this site is INTER-ACTION-. Thanks in advance.
